You Might Think You Can Travel Anywhere, But These 5 Places Could Be Your Undoing

Traveling to far-flung places all over the world is much easier now than it’s ever been before.

With sites like Expedia and Hotwire, it’s simple to book a decent hotel and flight package for a great price, which means that the hardest thing about exploring is usually giving your boss enough notice.

But with all that access comes the notion that we can go anywhere we want, which unfortunately isn’t the case. Don’t believe me? Check out these five places where humans can’t (and shouldn’t) go.

1. Ilha da Queimada Grande

This location is also known as Snake Island, and for good reason. It’s home to some of the world’s deadliest serpents, including the golden lancehead. Its bite packs a deadly punch.

2. Gruinard Island

The 1942, the British government used this island off the coast of Scotland for anthrax testing. In the 1980s, it was declared the most dangerous place in the world. It’s been cleaned up since then, but few dare to venture to Gruinard Island. Why risk it?

3. Surtsey Island

Created after a volcano off the coast of Iceland erupted in the 1960s, the island has since been taken over by scientists so that they can safely conduct experiments.

4. Ise Grand Shrine

With only high-ranking priests and members of the Japanese Imperial family allowed inside, high walls separate the temple complex, which is dedicated to the goddess Amaterasu, from the rest of the world. Until 1945, the monks were even separated from the rest of society by a river.

5. North Sentinel Island

After spending 60,000 years in isolation, the tribes on one of the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal don’t want you going anywhere near them. They’ve been known to murder anyone who gets too close, and they even shot down a helicopter back in 2004.

Ease of travel might trick us into thinking we can go anywhere, but some places on this planet (and their inhabitants) will do just about anything to keep us out.
