On November 2, 2016, Sherri Papini disappeared during her morning jog in Redding, California.
The 34-year-old mom of two had been missing for just over three weeks when she was spotted on the side of Interstate 5 in Yolo County on Thanksgiving. According to her husband, Keith, she was bound with a metal chain. After being taken to the hospital, Sherri told police that she had been kidnapped by two women who beat and then branded her with an unknown threatening message. However, certain details have caused police to suspect that her own husband was involved.
When Keith discovered that Sherri had gone missing, he retraced her steps and found her cell phone and headphones a mile away from their house. But police say the items appeared to have been “neatly placed” there instead of dropped.

What’s even more bizarre about all of this is that Sherri’s friend Tera Smith went missing on the same trail in 1998 when she was 16 years old and was never found. Shortly after Sherri disappeared, Keith visited Smith’s parents for “emotional support.”
