Eighth grader Gage Donner was walking down the hallway on his way to the restroom when a piece of hard candy became lodged in his throat, blocking his airway and causing him to start choking. Terrified, Donner tried to get the attention of another student, and that’s when Betsy Berry, a science teacher at Hallsville Middle School, stepped in.
Seeing the teen starting to turn purple, the heroic teacher immediately leapt to action and performed the Heimlich maneuver on the struggling student. The entire scene was caught on a school security camera.
Incredibly, Berry had no formal training, but she had seen her father perform this maneuver on her mother when she was a little girl. That memory undoubtedly saved Donner’s life.
