One Artist Is Causing Pedestrians To Stop And Stare When They Get To Crosswalks

Let’s get real for a second. Chances are that you have looked down at your phone for the sole purpose of avoiding eye contact with someone passing you on the street more than once.

I’ve definitely done it. The downside to always being physically and mentally plugged into my devices is that I don’t often take the time to notice the world around me, whether on purpose or by accident. It is this exact phenomenon that one artist in Madrid critiques in his latest street art series.

Bulgarian artist Christo Guelov is giving the crosswalks of Torrelodones, Madrid, a much-needed facelift. As part of his “Funnycross” project, Guelov is combining geometric patterns with bright, bold colors to make people lift their faces and notice the world around them.

“Funnycross” began at a zebra crosswalk located near a primary school in the neighborhood.

For part two of the project, he took this idea and ran with it, covering 13 more crosswalks in the process.

Guelov has partnered with the Torrelodones Council to fund even more creations!

His designs were initially created to help drivers and pedestrians stay alert.

Guelov once described the series as being a “bridge between two shores.”

He hopes to take “Funnycross” to the rest of Europe one day.

Well, this artist certainly has my attention. He should bring his creative touch to the States!
