If you aren’t sleeping 8 hours, you are sleep deprived. This is a problem for many people nowadays, since our lives tend to be so busy and we are preoccupied with work. Also, drinking caffeine to help you stay awake and do your work or studying can “help” this process as well. So, eventually, your body shows negative signs as a result of your sleep deprivation so make sure you get yourself some new king mattresses and start getting you sleep back on, or else you will suffer from some side effects.
It’s optimal to sleep 7-8 hours if you want to function properly the following day. However, continuous lack of sleep may lead to memory loss, negative effects on your looks, health, gaining weight or bad libido.
Here are some other side-effects that sleep deprivation may cause:
1. Accidents
There are many accidents throughout history that were the consequence of people being sleep deprived. Some of them are the Chernobyl nuclear meltdown, the nuclear accident in 1979 in Three Mile Island, and many more. Being drowsy slows down your reaction time, and at times you feel like you’re drunk. If you have a dangerous job, you should always try to get more sleep, since the lack of sleep may put your life in danger.
2. Makes you dumber
If you try to be a good student, sleeping well is a MUST. Why? Well, if you don’t sleep enough, you will have bad concentration, reasoning, problem solving, alertness and attention. So, you won’t be able to study properly.
3. It causes health problems
Studies have shown that people who don’t sleep enough are more prone to heart failure, heart attack, heart disease, irregular heartbeat, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure and more. Other studies have proven that an incredible 90% of people suffering from insomnia develop other health issues as well.
4. It reduces your libido
If you don’t sleep enough, you will lack energy and therefore won’t be in the mood for intercourse most of the time.
5. Causes depression
One study conducted in 2005 showed how people who were suffering from depression slept less than 6 hours.
6. You will look older
Continuous lack of sleep may cause puffy eyes, sallow sleep or more. If you haven’t slept for a couple of days,
people can tell immediately. Imagine doing it for a prolonged period of time.
7. Memory loss
French and American researchers in 2009 have conducted a study which showed how people who didn’t sleep enough started losing their memory.
8. You may gain weight
Sleep deprivation will make you hungrier than usual, so it’s closely related to obesity. A study in 2004 has shown how people who sleep less than 6 hours a night were 30% more likely to be overweight.
9. Impairs judgment
Not sleeping enough will make you go with bad decisions. If you have some responsible profession, you must sleep well in order to have good judgment. Otherwise, you may mess up.
10. Death
A British study published in 2007 showed how people who cut their sleep from 7 to 5 hours a night actually doubled the risk of dying. The most common reason were cardiovascular diseases.
