Teachers are mandated reporters, which means that if they hear or see that a student is in danger, they are required to contact the correct agency to get the child help.
Because educators spend so much time with their students, they are often in a good position to know if they need help. Recently, this huge and important responsibility was put in action when an 11-year-old girl arrived at her Louisiana school with a note from her mom that shocked everyone.
On November 1, the young girl’s mother slipped a note into her backpack that was intended for school officials. It said that the woman was scared and being held against her will.
East Feliciana Parish Sheriff Jeff Travis said that the woman and her daughter had been kept in a family acquaintance’s trailer “for at least a couple of weeks.”
“It’s very alarming when a student shows up with a note asking for help,” he added.
