Grier of The Craft Crib is no stranger to epic DIY makeovers, but it’s easy to understand why this latest project was one of her favorites.
While many would have walked right past this dated French provincial dresser at her local Goodwill, she knew it was a steal for just $80.
With just a can of paint and some boiling water from the stove, she was able to transform the outdated dresser into something far more glamourous.
Here’s the dresser she started with. Other than the fact that it was kind of ugly, the piece of furniture was in pretty good shape.
First, she chose a new color for the dresser — this white semi-gloss paint would give it a more neutral look.
She created her own version of chalk paint by combining one part plaster of Paris with one part water and three parts paint.
Grier prefers mixing her paint in tupperware containers. It leaves virtually no mess and preserving the paint is made easy by just affixing the lid.
She painted two layers of her chalk mixture, with a light sanding between the coats.
She added two coats of paint to the drawers and allowed them to sit overnight.
Finishing wax gave the paint some much-needed protection.
Then it was time to remove the original paint from the dresser’s hardware. First, she used some boiling water, baking soda, and a set of tongs.
She combined the water and baking soda, added the hardware, and let it boil for 30 minutes.
Sometimes your hardware might need a little more boiling time depending on the paint coverage.
After letting them dry, she found the hardware to still be a bit worn and rusty.
That’s when she brought in the big guns…Bar Keepers Friend.
She ran the hardware under some hot water, sprinkled on the cleaner, and scrubbed with an old toothbrush. Each piece sat for a minute before she rinsed them off.
The results of the cleaning and polish proved a noticeable difference in the shine of the hardware.
She reattached the handles and put the drawers back in the dresser.
