If you’ve ever known someone with Alzheimer’s disease, you know it’s absolutely heartbreaking.
Seeing a loved one suffer memory loss and confusion and having no way to help them can feel hopeless. People with Alzheimer’s tend to be elderly, but there’s a rare illness just like it that can affect children. Kids with Sanfilippo syndrome have shortened lifespans and forget how to do basic tasks. One brave family is trying to bring awareness to the illness and find a cure.
Carter Sarkar is just four years old, but he has been diagnosed with Sanfilippo syndrome.
He loves to run around and play, but doctors say that he’ll soon lose the ability to speak, walk, and even move. The degenerative disease will eventually take his life when he is just a teenager.
His dad Samir recalls, “I remember when Carter was born, counting his fingers and counting his toes and thinking everything was going to be okay.”
His parents want him to have a full life before he can no longer experience things like running, jumping, and playing with his older sister.
