It’s no secret that schizophrenia severely hinders the quality of life of those who suffer at the hands of this devastating condition.
For those who know people suffering from schizophrenia, it can be a trying experience to watch someone you love endure such struggle. The disease not only effects their perception of the world around them, but it can also have a massive impact on their general state of being.
Over the weekend, Redditor PortableDinosaur posted a series of photos from the inside of a home that once belonged to a schizophrenic man. He lived on his own, and the condition of his apartment will break your heart.
First stop, the cabinets. PortableDinosaur says they might have been the grossest cabinets he’d ever seen.
These are the mattresses that he supposedly slept on for 20 years before he was moved to get help.
As PortableDinosaur tells it, the man’s schizophrenia symptoms spiked soon after his wife divorced him. He then lived in squalor for two decades.
Apparently, the smell in this place was horrible — something along the lines of compost and burnt plastic, according to the Redditor.
This is what the desk looked like. In the corner by the window, there was a hotplate of some sort.
How does a floor even get this dirty?!
PortableDinosaur’s friend said not to open the fridge, but of course, he couldn’t resist. I’ll let him tell you in his own words what happened next.
“It smelled like decomposing veggies and vinegar. The second I opened it, this burning sensation hit my eyes and they got watery. I have smelled some horrible sh*t in my life, but this was the worst.”

Apparently, there was a bathroom that was equally cringeworthy. Luckily, this story has a happy ending. According PortableDinosaur, the man eventually got the help he needed and now works in IT for the government. Way to go, man!
