Tornados might be a rare sight in many parts of the world, but in regions where they’re common at certain times of the year, the sound of a warning siren strikes fear into many residents’ minds…and rightfully so.

Around 2:45 p.m. on May 20, 2013, the massive tornado touched down near Moore.
For the next 47 minutes, the tornado wreaked complete havoc on the town and its residents.
Despite warning and preparation for a possible tornado, 24 people died in those 47 minutes.
With peak winds of 210 miles per hour, such widespread destruction is understandable.
During those 47 minutes, the tornado carved a 17-mile path through a densely populated part of Moore.
At its peak, the tornado was about 1.3 miles wide, making it hard for some to escape its path.
About 1,150 homes were destroyed totaling close to $2 billion in damages to the town.
Those who saw the tornado and lived recalled it as “a giant black wall of destruction.”

In the years since the massive tornado, Moore has taken measures to ensure that all new homes are built to high standards so as to prevent another repeat of the massive destruction of 2013.
