Not a day goes by in my hometown where the news isn’t dominated by heartbreaking stories about drugs and addiction.
It seems like every day, the obituary section of the newspaper grows longer and longer as another son or daughter loses their battle with addiction. More than 23 million Americans over the age of 12 deal with either alcohol or drug addiction.
According to the National Association for Children of Alcoholics, children of addicted parents are more at risk of becoming addicted to drugs or alcohol as adults. Surprisingly, at least 13 percent of all children under the age of 18 live with a parent that relies heavily on drugs, and 24 percent of children live with a family member that actively binge drinks, so even the Xanax addiction and treatment options are well-known by pretty much everybody these days.
Since the children are our future, one father took it upon himself to tell his eight-year-old son that his mother passed away due to a heroin overdose and he even recorded the interaction. The son’s reaction is absolutely heartbreaking and paints a picture that is becoming all too familiar.
