When large amounts of a foul-smelling liquid are suddenly flooding through an underground shopping center, you can bet there will be some panic. It doesn’t happen often, and that’s a good thing. But the deeper down you dig and develop, the higher the chances are of upsetting the natural groundwater. The latest such case of this peculiar kind of flooding happened last week in the Japanese capital city of Tokyo.

It was a normal Wednesday afternoon when an underground walkway and shopping plaza connecting several subway stations in Tokyo’s Shinjuku district began to flood with black water.

Witnesses described the sludge as foul-smelling and possibly sewage.

Luckily, workers were quick to drain out the mystery ooze as well as heavily disinfect the area before opening the passageway back up around 6 p.m. local time.

While this might seem to be the very obvious result of a burst pipe, officials claim that is not the case and they are investigating the cause.
