When Lauren Vinje’s baby was born prematurely, weighing just under four pounds, she knew they had a hard battle ahead of them.
With preemies, every day brings new challenges and although the atmosphere in the hospital was heavy, the little one flashed a smile five days after her birth that changed everything.
Vinje writes, “This picture was one I looked at often to get me through the ups and downs of our NICU days. Life is so precious.”
When her adorable image was shared by Love What Matters, other moms decided to share their stories, too. An incredible number of parents posted photos and images of babies born prematurely in the hopes that their success stories would inspire other parents dealing with similar struggles.

Angela Soilleux added, “I was told my little girl would never smile after she suffered a stroke when she was born. She loves proving everybody wrong.”
Audrey-Lindy Cheatham wanted to share an image, too, writing, “My granddaughter, two pounds and 12 ounces. She is the happiest little lady!”
In this comparison, Natasha Bond shows the difference that time and care can make. “My little lady at two days old and three pounds, seven ounces. And now, 16 weeks old.”
“My sweet boy was born at 34 weeks and weighed five pounds, four ounces. After two weeks in the NICU, he is home and growing more every day! Those smiles are the best,” Kate Hoffman added.
