When Dena Carreyn’s daughter suddenly became very sick last year, she was horrified to hear from doctors that her baby was dying.
Four-year-old Lyla had been diagnosed with microscopic polyangiitis, which is a rare autoimmune disease that causes people to go into severe kidney failure. Although she went on dialysis, her condition didn’t improve and it became clear that she needed a new kidney.
Unless her family found a compatible donor for her, they would have to face the heartbreaking reality of losing their precious daughter. They began tirelessly searching for someone who would be willing to donate and created a Facebook page asking for help.
So when Dena was called into Lyla’s school on the pretense of meeting a new teacher, you can imagine the overwhelming feeling of joy that washed over her when she received this incredible gift.
It turns out that Beth Battista, Lyla’s preschool teacher, was a perfect match. This selfless woman made the amazing choice to give Lyla a kidney and save her life. They plan to go through with the operation this coming February.
Now Lyla has a future to look forward to, and it’s all thanks to the generosity of one caring teacher.
Talk about inspiring! Let’s all keep little Lyla in our thoughts as she fights through this hard time. As for Beth Battista, she deserves a round of applause.
