Dairy farmers often use a tool called hip clamps to help stabilize cows that are temporarily unable to stand.
SAFE, a New Zealand-based animal welfare organization, describes how hip clamps should be used. They note, “Hip clamps should not be left on any longer than 10 minutes and should be loosened and then removed as soon as the cow is bearing weight. They should be put on over light padding. The hip clamps themselves should also be padded using plastic, rubber, or foam tubing.”
