Nowadays, it’s so easy to recycle. Just about every establishment has bins for your used cans and bottles, so there’s no reason you shouldn’t be doing your part to save the environment.
And yet, “Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour.”
If you’re just not into sifting through your garbage for recyclables, consider what Redditor Mergs21 did with his old milk jugs. After collecting them over the course of a few months, he made them into something so cool!
Here’s his collection — that’s a lot of milk.
First he sorted all the caps out by color.
Then he got to work cutting everything up into manageable pieces.
The plan was to melt everything down. He layered the colors strategically into a glass bowl.
On the grill it went!
He heated it at 425 degrees and continually added more plastic as it melted down.
But when it grew dark outside, he had to move things to his oven.
Despite what you might think, it’s perfectly safe to melt HDPE plastic in your oven. No toxic fumes are released.
While the colors didn’t turn out like he’d hoped, the plastic blob was ready for the next step!
He used a lathe to sculpt and shape it down.
In the end, it turned out pretty nicely!
How cool is that? I never would have thought to reuse plastic bottles like that!
