Every once in a while, the story of a brutal crime and absolutely stuns the country…a crime so senselessly brutal and animalistic, you wonder if it really was a human who committed the murder and not some wild creature. Some of these crimes have taken place in the state of Florida, and today’s story is no exception to that trend.
On Monday, 19-year-old Florida State University student Austin Harrouff was having dinner with his parents at a Duffy’s restaurant in Tequesta, Florida. During the meal, Harrouff became angry, stormed out, killed two people, and began eating the face of one of his victims.
According to police, they responded to a 9-1-1 call of a stabbing. When they arrived, they found 19-year-old Harrouff biting off part of a dead man’s face in the man’s own driveway.

The victims, Joseph Stevens, 59, and his wife, Michelle Karen Mishcon, 53, each suffered fatal stab wounds allegedly from Harrouff. A neighbor who tried to intervene also received several stab wounds but is expected to pull through.

“He had no criminal record … he was a good kid,” said Martin County Sheriff William when he briefed reporters of the situation. “There’s not one thing in this case that seems to make sense. We grasp to get our footing and try to understand what happened and why … but we can’t.”

While it’s unclear what exactly caused Harrouff to become enraged and leave the restaurant, police were able to piece together what happened next.

The teen supposedly began walking in the direction of his father’s house, when he came across Stevens and Mischon sitting in their garage with the door open. That’s when he approached and attacked them.

While preliminary tests have turned up no drugs in Harrouff’s body, police think they may eventually find evidence of “Flakka.” Flakka is an intense drug that’s very similar to bath salts. Bath salts, if you remember, were responsible for the infamous 2012 Florida case where Rudy Eugene attacked a homeless man and chewed off his face.
