Brooklyn police described the situation in Rita Wolfensohn’s home as a “reverse ‘Psycho’ scene.”
The legally blind woman, from whom most of her family members were estranged, had been living with the corpse of her dead son for 20 years. She had no idea until she took a hard fall and required assistance to get to the hospital.
Relatives quickly discovered that the woman was a hoarder when they entered her home to gather her things, which struck a disheartening chord. Her son’s remains were found prostrate on a mattress among Wolfensohn’s collected ruins.
A police source told the New York Post that Wolfensohn’s sister-in-law, Josette Buchman, made the heartbreaking discovery in one of the second-floor bedrooms. The corpse was fully dressed and lying face up.
Oddly, the scent of the room wasn’t ripe with rotting flesh, but instead, smelled like old food. This led police to believe that, given the condition of the home, it was reasonable to believe that she really didn’t know his body was there. No one had seen her son Louis for 20 years, and Wolfensohn had no idea that she’d been living with her child’s body for all that time.
According to Jezebel’s Madeleine Davies, “When interrogated about her son, Wolfensohn spoke of him as though she thought he had moved out a long time ago.”
The widow just assumed that Louis had become estranged, as was the unfortunate case with all of her other living relatives.
As of now, there is no word on where Wolfensohn is staying, but her brother and sister-in-law were seen leaving an assisted living facility on Long Island last weekend.
