Having your larynx removed involves undergoing a complex procedure and is not something to be taken lightly.
Typically, this kind of extreme surgery is considered a last resort to stop the advancement of throat cancer. While having this surgery might save your life, it can also rob you of your ability to speak.
Today, we have some fairly advanced pieces of technology called electrolarynxes that can help those without voice boxes communicate. Back in the ’60s, similar devices were not nearly as sophisticated as they are now. This recording from 1964 of a person speaking after the removal of their larynx is actually pretty disturbing.
You’d better put on headphones for this one.

As if you needed another reason to quit smoking, right? Imagine living your life like this, unable to truly communicate with those around you. It sounds like a nightmare.
