Ball lightning is one of the rarest atmospheric phenomena known to man. Throughout history, there have been stories of researchers and ordinary folk encountering ball-shaped lightning. However, we still don’t know how it happens, and despite years of research, scientists have been unable to recreate it in a controlled environment.
New footage from outside of Novosibirsk, Russia, is breathing new life into the ball lightning debate. The video was taken by Roman Tregubov, a graduate of the Novosibirsk State Technical University. This is the first time ball lightning has been captured on film with such clarity.
