While college graduation speeches have a bit of a reputation for being cool (like, Lin-Manuel Miranda cool), middle school and high school grad speeches are usually snoozefests.
Teens are just awkward. It’s a fact of life, and my old Myspace account is proof positive. Forcing them to stand at podiums in front of their families, teachers, and the monsters with whom they shared the halls is usually a recipe for disaster.
But this kid is an outlier. When it came time for him to draft his middle school graduation speech, he decided to take some inspiration from the presidential candidates we all know and love (read: really don’t love at all).
If your studious kid is poised to speak at their ceremony this year or next, don’t let them watch this.
Setting them up for personal disappointment just isn’t cool.
