Sometimes, it’s easy to forget that doctors and nurses are human beings and are just as likely to make mistakes as the rest of us. Unfortunately for doctors, when they make a mistake or misdiagnose someone, they can drastically change that person’s life forever.
Rufino Borrego was just 13 when he was misdiagnosed by a doctor in Lisbon, Portugal. Physicians believed that Borrego had incurable muscular dystrophy. which subsequently left him wheelchair bound.
After over 40 years of being confined to a wheelchair, a neurologist discovered that Borrego didn’t suffer from muscular dystrophy, but a disease known as myasthenia.
Myasthenia is a rare disease that weakens muscles. Fortunately for Borrego, it can be treated with the same medications used to alleviate asthma symptoms.
Just a year after his new diagnosis, Borrego was able to walk for the first time in over four decades. Now at age 61, he is living a normal life.
