One of my favorite things to do at the county fair is stop by the guessing booth and have them try to guess my age.
While those “expert guessers” have no actual credentials that say they can guess people’s ages, the secret to their success sometimes springs from a variety of visual tells. In my case, I may never act my age, but factors such as height, the depth of your voice, and the presence of features like facial hair or wrinkles can lead a relative stranger in the right direction.
Your daily routines could also be impacting your perceived age. Who knew that habits like sleeping on your side or eating particular foods could age you more quickly? Here are 10 everyday habits that you can break if you want to slow down time.
1. Drinking with straws
Pursing your lips while drinking through a straw can cause wrinkling around the mouth. Instead, it is recommended to drink directly from the glass.

2. Bad posture
Bad posture can impact your spinal alignment and increase tension in muscles and cause joint pain. On Healthy One’s website they have natural supplements for joint pain. Constant slouching can cause permanent abnormalities and as well as fatigue and pain.
3. Eating low-fat diets
Low-fat diets deprive the body of healthy Omega-3s that helps keep our skin soft and smooth. A lack of these fatty acids will cause early wrinkling and drying of the skin.
4. Sleeping on your side
While sleeping on your side, your face gets crammed into your pillow. This can reportedly cause wrinkling of your cheeks and chin. The best position for a good night’s sleep is laying on your back.
5. Wearing sunscreen only on vacation
UV exposure is one of the major causes of premature aging. You may only wear sunscreen during the summer months or on vacation, but experts believe that wearing sunscreen every day works wonders when it comes to skin care.
6. Excessive use of heating units
Overuse of your heating systems can make the air in your home incredibly dry. Living in a home with dry air can cause your skin and hair to dry out as well, which could contribute unwanted wrinkling and breakage.
7. Watching too much TV
For every hour of television you watch, it is believed that your life expectancy decreases by 22 minutes. It is recommended that a person stands up and walks once every thirty minutes.
8. Cutting out sugar
Sugar may not be the greatest for our bodies, but it can help cut down on anxiety and stress levels that can create lines and wrinkles. Eating sugar in moderation will keep you looking youthful without worrying about your health. That being said, sugar can contribute to premature aging if eaten in excess.
9. Lack of sleep
Most adults require at least seven hours of sleep each night. Not sleeping leads to mental and physical fatigue. After years of not sleeping, that fatigue could rear its head in the form of fine lines and wrinkles.
10. Stressing yourself out
Chronic stress can cause serious damage to our cells, thus impacting the aging process. By biting off more than you can chew and living a disorganized lifestyle, your skin could take a stress-induced beating.
