Just when you thought it was safe to go in the water this summer, the sea lamprey decided to screw it all up. If you’re living in the U.K., you need to hear this…
Officials there have issued a warning to bathers to watch out for an alarming number of sea lampreys that are currently making their way up rivers to lay their eggs.
In case you don’t know, the mouth of a lamprey fish looks like this. They don’t eat their prey in the traditional sense. Instead, they latch on and suck their blood…
Here you can see a pair of lampreys making a meal out of a river trout. Yeah, that doesn’t look like fun.
Typically, lampreys are sea dwellers, but they usually make their way upstream during the summers to breed and lay their eggs.
While they usually target fish for their blood-sucking, lampreys aren’t picky. If a human happens to swim by and they’re hungry…well, I’ll let you guess what happens.
Pure nightmare fuel.

Sadly, there’s not much the U.K. can do about the lampreys at the moment that wouldn’t also result in the killing of a lot of other less sinister fish. Watch out for those vampire fish, folks!
